What the Lean Canvas changes, and why

Ash Maurya built the Lean Canvas for one situation: a startup that does not yet know whether the problem is real or the solution is right. Partners, key activities, and relationship management are tomorrow's problems for that team, so he removed those blocks and replaced them with the four questions that actually kill early startups.

BMC block (removed)Lean Canvas block (added)Why
Key PartnershipsProblemStartups fail by building the wrong thing, not by lacking partners
Key ActivitiesSolutionA deliberately small box keeps the solution subordinate to the problem
Key ResourcesKey MetricsThe few numbers that show model health, instead of vanity metrics
Customer RelationshipsUnfair AdvantageForces honesty about what cannot be copied or bought

The other five blocks stay: Customer Segments (with an early-adopters prompt), Unique Value Proposition, Channels, Revenue Streams, and Cost Structure. Maurya's advice on filling it: sketch the whole canvas in about 20 minutes, Problem and Customer Segments first as a pair, then test the riskiest assumption before polishing anything. The full comparison lives in our guide: Lean Canvas vs Business Model Canvas.

Which canvas should you start with?

  • Pre-launch or pre-product-market-fit: Lean Canvas. Problem and solution risk dominate everything else.
  • Existing business, new product line, corporate innovation: Business Model Canvas. Partners, activities, and relationships are real decisions now.
  • Unsure: start with the BMC. Our free templates download instantly in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF, and switching to Lean later takes an afternoon, not a rewrite.

What's in our Lean Canvas template

  • The 9-box Lean layout in Excel (structured grid) and Word (document form)
  • Guided prompts in every block, including Maurya's early-adopters and high-level-concept sub-prompts
  • Fill-order guidance: Problem + Segments as a pair, Unfair Advantage last (and allowed to stay empty honestly)
  • Correct CC BY-SA attribution to both Maurya and Osterwalder baked into the files

It ships as a bonus inside the Complete Business Model Toolkit, next to the SWOT template, the Value Proposition Fit worksheet, the master Excel workbook, and 10 real-company canvas examples.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lean business model canvas?
The Lean Canvas is Ash Maurya’s startup-focused adaptation of the Business Model Canvas. It keeps the one-page, 9-box format but swaps four blocks: Problem replaces Key Partnerships, Solution replaces Key Activities, Key Metrics replaces Key Resources, and Unfair Advantage replaces Customer Relationships.
Is the Lean Canvas better than the Business Model Canvas?
Neither is better; they fit different stages. Lean Canvas suits pre-product-market-fit startups where problem and solution risk dominate. The Business Model Canvas suits existing businesses and corporate innovation, where partners, activities, and relationships matter. Many teams start Lean and graduate to the BMC.
Where can I download a lean canvas template?
Our Lean Canvas template ships in Excel and Word inside the Complete Business Model Toolkit, alongside the master workbook and examples. If you are still choosing between the two canvases, our free Business Model Canvas templates download instantly on this site.
Who created the Lean Canvas and can it be used commercially?
Ash Maurya created the Lean Canvas (leanstack.com) as an adaptation of Osterwalder’s Business Model Canvas. Like the original, it is licensed under Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0, so it is free to use and adapt with attribution.
